Meal prep in San Diego

Built for a county that trains early and lives a long way apart.

San Diego is a fitness city with a year-round season. Surf mornings, run clubs along the bay, CrossFit boxes across Miramar and Kearny Mesa, and a large active-duty and veteran population all produce the same customer: somebody ordering macro-counted meals a week at a time. Mealforma is meal prep software that gives a San Diego company one place to sell those plans, take the orders and see the week's numbers.

The county is the delivery problem. A single company can have customers in La Jolla, downtown, Chula Vista and Escondido, an hour apart at the wrong time of day on the I-5 or the I-15. Mealforma builds each day's route from the actual orders, gives the driver the stops in order with the customer's notes, and takes a photo on delivery — so a long county day is still one list rather than a group chat.

Delivery zones, fees and cut-off times are settings you change yourself. Most San Diego operators start coastal or central, then add North County or the South Bay when the orders are there; on Mealforma that is a zone and a delivery window, not a new system or a call to support.

A good share of the county's customers order in Spanish, and plenty want everything on their phone: pick this week's meals, skip a week, pause while they are away. The storefront and the customer account handle both without an email to you.

How to start a meal prep business in California

Why San Diego operators move

Three things we decided, so you do not have to negotiate them.

Built-in AI. Set up in minutes, easy every day.

Your shop is ready the moment you sign up, and your team can run it without training. Then switch on AI wherever it helps: a chat on your website that answers customers from your own menu, an assistant in your admin that finds orders and drafts replies, and recipe import that turns a pasted recipe into macros and labels.

See what the AI does

No percentage of your sales. Ever.

A flat monthly price, and that is the whole bill for the platform. We do not take a cut of your orders, your subscriptions or your growth, and we are not going to add it later.

One system, from the shopping cart to the driver.

The menu a customer orders from is the same data the kitchen produces against, the labels print from, and the route is built from. Nothing is re-keyed between tools.

Scope

Meal prep software from the shopping cart to the front door.

Six surfaces that share one catalogue, one set of recipe versions and one order record. Nothing is re-keyed between them.

Storefront and customer portal

A shop your customers order from, and a portal they manage their plan in — both driven by your catalogue rather than a separate website you keep in sync by hand.

Subscriptions and checkout

The part most meal-prep businesses actually run on, modelled properly instead of as a recurring charge with a menu attached.

Kitchen production

What to cook, how much, and from which recipe version — computed from the orders that are actually locked, not from a guess.

Labels and compliance

Labels print from the same recipe and nutrition versions the kitchen produced against, at exact physical size.

Delivery, routing and the driver app

Dispatch that assumes the phone loses signal, because in a delivery van it does.

Admin, staff and the assistant

The back office, with the permissions and the audit trail a business with staff actually needs.

Questions San Diego operators ask

Can I deliver across the whole county without one giant route?

Yes. You draw the areas you deliver to as zones, each with its own days, delivery windows and fee, and the route for a day is built from the orders in those zones. A coastal run and a South Bay run are two routes on the same day, each with its own driver and its own stop order, not one list somebody splits by hand.

Our customers are half English, half Spanish. Can the storefront be both?

Yes. The storefront, the customer account and the emails are translated, and your own menu text can be written in each language you sell in. A customer picks their language and keeps it; nothing about their plan changes.

We sell macro plans to gyms and trainers. Does it handle that?

Macros are computed from your recipes and the amounts you actually use, per portion size, and printed on the label. Customers can choose meals against their own calorie and protein targets, and you can type your own figures for anything bought in rather than cooked.

What about the health department paperwork?

Mealforma does not file anything for you — your kitchen is permitted by San Diego County's Department of Environmental Health and Quality, and that stays between you and them. What the software gives you is the record they ask about: which recipe version each batch was cooked from, what went on the label, and when it was produced and delivered.

Can we start with pick-up at the kitchen and add delivery later?

Yes. Pick-up windows and delivery zones are both settings. Plenty of San Diego companies start with a Sunday pick-up from the kitchen, add one delivery day when the orders justify it, then a second zone — none of that needs a migration or a new plan.
