Meal prep in San Francisco
Built for a small city with hard streets and tall buildings.
San Francisco is seven miles across and full of people who cook twice a week at most. Hospital staff in Parnassus and Mission Bay work twelve-hour shifts, the offices in SoMa and the Financial District empty late, and the gyms and run clubs from the Marina to the Embarcadero produce the rest. Diets here are specific — vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, high-protein — and customers expect to filter for them before they subscribe. Mealforma is meal prep software that lets a San Francisco company sell those plans, take the orders and run the week in one place.
Delivery here is not a distance problem. Seven miles is nothing; parking on Russian Hill at six in the evening is everything. Add one-way streets, blocks steep enough to matter, lobby buzzers, and buildings where a box left on the step does not stay there. Mealforma gives the driver the stops in order with the customer's own note — the buzzer, the side door, the neighbor who signs — and a photo at the drop, and the route stays on the phone when the signal goes.
The market does not stop at the county line. A kitchen in the Bayview or Dogpatch picks up Daly City and South San Francisco quickly, then Oakland and Berkeley across the bridge, where the bridge traffic makes a same-day double run unrealistic. Most operators run the city on two days and the Peninsula or the East Bay on a third. Delivery zones, delivery days, cut-off times and fees are settings you change yourself, so adding the East Bay is a zone with its own Wednesday rather than a second system.
San Franciscans do everything from their phone and expect to. Choose this week's meals, swap one, skip a week, pause while they travel — none of that should need an email to you, and on Mealforma it does not. A large share of the city's households speak Chinese or Spanish at home, and the storefront, the customer account and the emails are translated, so a customer picks their language once and keeps it without anything about their plan changing.

How to start a meal prep business in CaliforniaWhy San Francisco operators move
Three things we decided, so you do not have to negotiate them.
Built-in AI. Set up in minutes, easy every day.
Your shop is ready the moment you sign up, and your team can run it without training. Then switch on AI wherever it helps: a chat on your website that answers customers from your own menu, an assistant in your admin that finds orders and drafts replies, and recipe import that turns a pasted recipe into macros and labels.
See what the AI doesNo percentage of your sales. Ever.
A flat monthly price, and that is the whole bill for the platform. We do not take a cut of your orders, your subscriptions or your growth, and we are not going to add it later.

The menu a customer orders from is the same data the kitchen produces against, the labels print from, and the route is built from. Nothing is re-keyed between tools.
Everything it does
Scope
Meal prep software from the shopping cart to the front door.
Six surfaces that share one catalogue, one set of recipe versions and one order record. Nothing is re-keyed between them.
Storefront and customer portal
A shop your customers order from, and a portal they manage their plan in — both driven by your catalogue rather than a separate website you keep in sync by hand.
Subscriptions and checkout
The part most meal-prep businesses actually run on, modelled properly instead of as a recurring charge with a menu attached.
Kitchen production
What to cook, how much, and from which recipe version — computed from the orders that are actually locked, not from a guess.
Labels and compliance
Labels print from the same recipe and nutrition versions the kitchen produced against, at exact physical size.
Delivery, routing and the driver app
Dispatch that assumes the phone loses signal, because in a delivery van it does.
Admin, staff and the assistant
The back office, with the permissions and the audit trail a business with staff actually needs.

Questions San Francisco operators ask
Our stops are close together but parking is the whole job. Does routing help with that?
It helps with the part software can help with: the day's route is built from the orders that are locked, the driver gets the stops in an order that does not double back, and the whole list is held on the phone so a garage or a hill with no signal does not lose it. Where to actually put the van is still the driver's call — but they are making it once per block, not once per guess.
Most of our customers are in apartment buildings with a buzzer. Where do those notes live?
On the customer's address, so they travel with every order rather than living in a text thread. Buzzer number, unit, the side gate on the alley, leave it with the front desk — the customer writes it once in their account and it shows on the stop in the driver app. Each drop is time-stamped with a photo, so a missing box is a record rather than an argument.
Our customers order in English, Chinese and Spanish. Can the storefront be all three?
Yes. The storefront, the customer account and the emails are translated, and your own menu text can be written in each language you sell in. A customer picks their language and keeps it; nothing about their plan, their meals or their billing changes with it.
We sell a lot of vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free plans. What ends up on the label?
Whatever your recipes say. Ingredients, allergens and nutrition print from the recipe version the kitchen actually cooked, at the label's real size, so a recipe change reaches the label without anyone retyping it. Mealforma computes from your data and prints it — it does not certify a dish as free of anything, and no part of the system will claim that for you.
Who permits our kitchen, and does Mealforma deal with them?
No — your kitchen is permitted and inspected by the San Francisco Department of Public Health's Environmental Health Branch, and that stays between you and them. What the software gives you is the record they ask about: which recipe version each batch was cooked from, what went on the label, and when it was produced and delivered.
