Meal prep in Chicago
Built for a city of winters, walk-ups and one-way streets.
Chicago buys meal prep hardest in January and keeps buying through March. Winter takes away the casual cooking habit and the casual gym habit at the same time, and a box that arrives on Sunday fixes both. The rest of the year the demand is steady: hospital staff in Streeterville and on the West Side, people who train before work in the West Loop and Lincoln Park, and households in Lakeview and Logan Square where the kitchen is the size of a hallway. Mealforma is the software a Chicago company sells and runs all of that on.
Winter is the delivery problem and it lasts. Snow narrows a street to one lane, the salt trucks own the arterials, and between the overnight parking ban and dibs a familiar block stops being familiar. Most of the North Side is three-flats and walk-ups with a shared vestibule and a buzzer, and downtown is towers with a package room. Mealforma gives the driver the stops in order with the customer's own note — unit, buzzer, back stairs — and a photo at the drop, and the app holds the route when the signal does not.
The grid helps and the expressways do not. A run up Milwaukee or Western is predictable; the Kennedy and the Eisenhower at five o'clock are not, and Lake Shore Drive is the first thing to go in weather. The city is around twenty-five miles top to bottom, so a North Side day and a South Side day are genuinely different days. Delivery zones, delivery days, cut-off times and fees are settings you change yourself, so splitting the city — or adding Evanston and Oak Park — is a zone, not a rebuild.
Chicago customers manage the whole thing from their phone: choose this week's meals, swap one, skip the week they are out of town, pause for the summer. Letting them do that themselves is the difference between a subscription that survives August and one you have to win back in September. A large share of the city orders in Spanish, and the storefront, the customer account and the emails are translated, so a customer picks their language once and keeps it without anything about their plan changing.

How to start a meal prep business in IllinoisWhy Chicago operators move
Three things we decided, so you do not have to negotiate them.
Built-in AI. Set up in minutes, easy every day.
Your shop is ready the moment you sign up, and your team can run it without training. Then switch on AI wherever it helps: a chat on your website that answers customers from your own menu, an assistant in your admin that finds orders and drafts replies, and recipe import that turns a pasted recipe into macros and labels.
See what the AI doesNo percentage of your sales. Ever.
A flat monthly price, and that is the whole bill for the platform. We do not take a cut of your orders, your subscriptions or your growth, and we are not going to add it later.

The menu a customer orders from is the same data the kitchen produces against, the labels print from, and the route is built from. Nothing is re-keyed between tools.
Everything it does
Scope
Meal prep software from the shopping cart to the front door.
Six surfaces that share one catalogue, one set of recipe versions and one order record. Nothing is re-keyed between them.
Storefront and customer portal
A shop your customers order from, and a portal they manage their plan in — both driven by your catalogue rather than a separate website you keep in sync by hand.
Subscriptions and checkout
The part most meal-prep businesses actually run on, modelled properly instead of as a recurring charge with a menu attached.
Kitchen production
What to cook, how much, and from which recipe version — computed from the orders that are actually locked, not from a guess.
Labels and compliance
Labels print from the same recipe and nutrition versions the kitchen produced against, at exact physical size.
Delivery, routing and the driver app
Dispatch that assumes the phone loses signal, because in a delivery van it does.
Admin, staff and the assistant
The back office, with the permissions and the audit trail a business with staff actually needs.

Questions Chicago operators ask
Snow shuts us down for an afternoon. What happens to the stops we did not reach?
The software will not drive in a blizzard, but it keeps the day straight. Every stop the driver completed is marked with a time and a photo; the ones that were not stay open on the route, so at seven in the evening you have the exact list of who was missed and can call or re-run them rather than reconstructing it from memory and a phone full of texts.
January is two or three times our normal volume. Does the kitchen side keep up?
Production quantities are computed from the orders that are actually locked at your cut-off, per recipe version and per portion size — so a January week and a July week are the same job, just bigger numbers. The kitchen works from what was ordered rather than from last week's guess, and the labels print from the same versions the kitchen cooked against.
Most of our customers live in three-flats with a shared vestibule. Where does the buzzer number live?
On the customer's address, so it travels with every order instead of sitting in your inbox. Unit number, buzzer, back stairs, leave it inside the vestibule — the customer writes it once in their account and the driver sees it on the stop. The driver app also holds the route on the phone, so an alley or a parking garage with no signal does not lose the list.
Can the North Side and the South Side be different delivery days?
Yes, and across twenty-five miles that is usually the only sane way to do it. Each zone you draw has its own delivery days, delivery windows, minimum order and fee, and a customer's address decides which zone they are in at checkout. Two zones delivering on the same day are two routes with two drivers, each with its own stop order.
Who licenses our kitchen, and does Mealforma handle any of that?
No — inside the city a food establishment is licensed and inspected by the Chicago Department of Public Health, and that stays between you and them. What the software gives you is the record they ask about: which recipe version each batch was cooked from, what went on the label, and when it was produced and delivered.
